Behaviour and design of fixed‐ended steel equal‐leg angle section columns

The mechanical behaviour and design of fixed-ended steel equal-leg angle section members subjected to axial compression are addressed in this study. First, the critical buckling is described. Experimental data on columns collected from literature then used for validation numerical (shell finite element) models, developed within commercial package ABAQUS. Validation performed by means comparisons between test results, considering ultimate loads, failure modes load-deformation responses, all which shown be generally good agreement. A parametric study presented with a wide range slenderness values. load-carrying capacity dependent on, not only column slenderness, but also ratio elastic torsional-flexural load minor-axis flexural load. Finally, experimental generated results develop new approach columns, reflecting observations made. proposed offers improved accuracy consistency strength predictions compared existing codified rules.
